Driving on a Foreign Licence
Whether you can simply drive, or must exchange, or must start again, depends on an agreement between Argentina and the country that issued your licence. Where one exists the arrangement can be remarkably light - Chileans and Argentines drive in each other's countries with no procedure at all - and it is time-limited: recognition lapses after a year of continuous stay, which is the deadline most people miss.
At a glance
- Basis
- Bilateral agreement with the issuing country
- Recognition lapses after
- 1 continuous year of stay
- Professional and commercial licences
- Excluded
- Issuing authority
- Agencia Nacional de Seguridad Vial
Requirements
- Recognition of a foreign licence depends on a bilateral agreement with the issuing country
- Where one applies, a valid licence and meeting the minimum age set by the other country's rules
- Professional licences used for commercial purposes are outside these arrangements
- Recognition ends after one continuous year of stay, after which the licence is no longer valid for driving
Exceptions by origin
Chilean Licences: Drive Without Any Procedure, Then Exchange
Under the agreement signed on 26 January 2021, Chileans may drive in Argentina with no procedure whatsoever - no form, no fee, no office. That lasts until a year of continuous stay has passed. Within the first year of residence there is a separate exchange route, open only if the Chilean licence was obtained before residency was granted.
- To drive: a valid Chilean licence and the minimum age Argentina requires for that class. Nothing else
- To exchange: be within the first year of residence in Argentina
- The Chilean licence must have been obtained before you were granted residency
- Chilean licence, Argentine DNI and Chilean identity card, originals and copies
- For class D, a criminal record certificate
- Request the authorising certificate from the road safety agency by email before applying
What the law says
«La licencia de conducir reconocida, dejara de tener validez (a los fines de circulación en el territorio), transcurrido un (1) año continuo de permanencia en el territorio del otro país.»Our translation - not official
The recognised driving licence will cease to be valid (for the purposes of driving in the territory) after one (1) continuous year of stay in the territory of the other country.
The clock runs on continuous presence, not on the licence's own expiry date. Someone who settles and keeps driving on a foreign licence loses cover on the anniversary without anything visibly changing.

Argentina's road safety agency, which runs the national driving licence framework and publishes the bilateral recognition and exchange agreements Argentina has signed.
Standing: Applies the rule
Cannot be cited for: It publishes the agreements it administers, one page per agreement, and there is no single page listing them all - so an absence here is not evidence that no agreement exists. Licences themselves are issued by municipalities within the agency's framework, so local practice is not covered.

Practical notes
We have read the Chile agreement only. Argentina has arrangements with other countries which are not recorded here, and their terms need not match.
The national licence itself is issued by municipalities under the national agency's framework, so local offices administer the process.
