Rentista (Passive-Income) Temporary Residency

Answer

The general rule applies to you

No exception is recorded for citizens of Bolivia on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Bolivia to Argentina · Residency on passive income

Argentina grants one year of renewable temporary residency to a foreigner who can show a recurring income of at least five monthly minimum wages, produced by assets rather than by working. The wage figure is indexed, so the threshold moves with it several times a year; the requirement that the money be passive, and that it arrive through the Argentine banking system, is what actually decides most applications.

Figures marked CALC are our arithmetic, not a figure in any instrument. Where the law states a threshold as a multiple of something else, the amount shown is that multiple applied - and it moves when the underlying figure does.

Requirements

  • Income of at least five Salarios Minimo Vital y Movil per month
  • The income must come from assets in your estate AND from abroad - the rule is about foreign-sourced returns on capital, not merely non-salary income
  • Qualifying assets are financial instruments, real property and shareholdings, plus anything else the Direccion General de Inmigracion accepts at its own judgement
  • Compensation for personal work is explicitly excluded, whatever its size
  • The funds must enter Argentina through banks or financial institutions authorised by the Banco Central
  • Valid passport, or a Mercosur travel document listed in Annex I of DC-46-2015-CMC for Mercosur nationals
  • Argentine criminal record certificate - built into RaDEX, you do not apply for it separately, except when using a preferential appointment, where you must obtain it outside RaDEX and bring it on the day
  • Criminal record certificates from every country you lived in for more than a year in the last three years, for applicants 16 and over
  • Proof of address, and proof that you entered the country legally
  • Foreign documents apostilled, or legalised by the Argentine consulate where the Hague Convention does not apply
  • Documents in another language translated by a traductor publico nacional and legalised by the Colegio de Traductores
  • All documents must be originals, and DNM may ask for more than the published list

How the process runs

  1. Step 1

    Pay the migration fee

    pagos.dnm.gov.ar

Through the DNM payment module. Card payments confirm immediately; cash takes five business days.

  2. Step 2

    File the application online

    radex.dnm.gov.ar

Upload the full document set through RaDEX. The system checks that you entered the country legally and that you are inside Argentina.

  3. Step 3

    Wait for the appointment

    email

DNM emails the status of the application and the date of the in-person appointment to the address you registered.

  4. Step 4

    Attend in person

    a DNM office

The application is only closed once every fee has been paid.

  5. Step 5

    Get the DNI

    RENAPER

The identity document is issued by RENAPER after residency is approved, not before.

In detail

Who this route is actually for

The rentista permit is built around a distinction Argentine law draws sharply and most guides blur: between income your money earns and income your time earns. Dividends, rent from property, royalties and returns on financial instruments qualify. A salary does not, even a foreign one, even a large one - the official wording excludes 'retribuciones obtenidas por el trabajo personal', compensation obtained from personal work. A remote employee earning five times the threshold from an overseas employer is not a rentista in the sense this permit means, and the amount does not cure that. If your income comes from working, the pathways to read instead are the migrant-worker permit or, if you can get one, the digital-nomad category.

The threshold is a moving number

The requirement is expressed as five Salarios Minimo Vital y Movil, not as a sum of money, so any peso or dollar figure is a snapshot that ages the moment the wage is revised - and Argentina has been revising it several times a year. We are deliberately not printing a converted figure here: we have not read the current wage off an official instrument, only off news reporting, and a number sourced to a newspaper is not what this page is for. Take the multiple from here and the current wage from the Consejo del Salario, and do the arithmetic against the exchange rate on the day you need it.

Where the official text and reported practice diverge

The official requirement is the five-wage multiple above, and that is what the published text says. Secondary reporting - immigration practitioners and expatriate accounts - consistently describes officials expecting more in practice, with figures around USD 2,000 a month and savings around USD 24,000 frequently cited. We have not confirmed that against any official instrument and do not present it as a rule. What the text does give the directorate is explicit discretion: qualifying assets include 'u otros extremos a juicio de la Direccion General de Inmigracion', so there is a documented margin of judgement, which is the likeliest thing the reported practice is describing.

What Decree 366/2025 adds on top

Since May 2025 this permit sits under the decree that rewrote the migration law. Three consequences matter to a rentista. Entry now requires a sworn declaration of purpose and proof of health insurance. Ordinary public healthcare is no longer free as of right for temporary residents - emergency care still is, for everyone. And a continuous absence of six months or more is a ground for cancelling the permit, which is not the same as a requirement to be present for half the year.

Country-level policy

Decree 366/2025 - Physical Presence & Healthcare Access Reform

A decree of necessity and urgency published on 29 May 2025 that rewrote parts of four laws at once - the Migration Law 25.871, the Citizenship Law 346, the Higher Education Law 24.521 and the National Education Law 26.206. It is modelled here as a country-level policy rather than inside any one topic because a single instrument changed entry conditions, healthcare access, university fees, permanent-residency requirements and the grounds for cancelling a residence permit simultaneously. If you hold or are applying for any Argentine residence permit, this is the instrument most likely to affect you.

What applies to you

Nothing changes for a citizen of Bolivia

We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

What the law says

Text layer - verbatim verifiedLey 25.871 art. 23 inc. b), regulated by Decreto 616/2010 and Disposicion DNM 1.732/2023 (amended by 3446/2023), as published by DNM
«Residencia Temporaria para personas extranjeras que solventen su estadía con beneficios provenientes de activos incorporados a su patrimonio y provenientes del exterior (instrumentos financieros, inmuebles, participaciones en empresas, u otros extremos a juicio de la DIRECCIÓN GENERAL DE INMIGRACIÓN) no incluyéndose en esta categoría retribuciones obtenidas por el trabajo personal.»

Our translation - not official

Temporary residency for foreigners who support their stay with benefits arising from assets forming part of their estate and originating abroad (financial instruments, real property, shareholdings in companies, or other matters at the judgement of the DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF IMMIGRATION), not including in this category compensation obtained from personal work.

Two conditions are usually dropped in retellings: the assets must produce income from abroad, and what counts as a qualifying asset is open-ended at the immigration directorate's discretion.

Practical notes

The Argentine criminal record certificate is generated inside RaDEX; you only chase it separately if you pay for a preferential appointment, in which case you must bring it on the day.

DNM states that no gestor is needed and that the only payments due are the ones its own platform generates.

Translations must be done by a traductor publico nacional and legalised by the Colegio de Traductores - a translation done abroad will generally not do.

Filing from an Argentine consulate rather than inside the country is priced in consular units (600 extra-Mercosur, 300 Mercosur) rather than UMSM.

    About this source

Argentina's official gazette. An act is not merely announced here, it takes legal effect on publication, which is why a decree carries the gazette's issue number and date as part of its identity. Decree 366/2025 appears here as issue 35.676 of 29 May 2025.

    Standing: Issues the instrument

Cannot be cited for: It publishes instruments as enacted and does not consolidate them. What you read here is the amending act, not the amended law, so an article number in a decree is an instruction to amend and does not correspond to the article number in the law that results. An article number cited from a decree therefore needs translating into the article of the law it amends. The consolidated text is a different publisher: see `ar-infoleg`.
