Entering Belize as a Visitor
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of The Bahamas on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

Belize's Immigration Act sets the visitor's permit at up to six months, and lets the Director extend it by up to six months more - a statutory ceiling of twelve months. The Immigration Department works to a much shorter number: it tells travellers that entry buys thirty days, and sells thirty-day extensions at BZ$200 each. Both statements are in front of you here, because the gap between them is the single most useful thing to know before you plan a long stay. Whether you need a visa in the first place is published by the Department as a search box rather than a list, so we do not reproduce it; what the Department does state in plain text is that a multiple-entry United States or Canadian visa, a United States or Canadian permanent residence card, or a multiple-entry Schengen visa, each stands in for a Belize visa on a visit of up to thirty days.
At a glance
- Visitor's permit in the Act
- Up to six months
A ceiling the Director may grant up to, not an entitlement
- Extension in the Act
- Further periods not exceeding six months in the aggregate
So twelve months is the outer limit of a visitor's permit plus extensions
- Period the Immigration Department says a visa buys
- 30 days from date of entryas of 2026-10-05
- Visitor's permit extension granted by the Department
- 30 days
- Extension fee
- BZ$200.00
Charged monthly in the fee schedule; the Department describes it as a flat fee per thirty-day extension
- Visa exemption for US, Canadian and Schengen document holders
- Visits not exceeding 30 days
- Employment on a visitor's permit
- Not permitted without the Minister's written permission
Requirements
- A valid passport, presented to the immigration officer at the place of entry; a child under sixteen without a passport of their own must be included in a parent's
- A visa issued by a Belize consular officer, where regulations require one for your nationality
- Entry for a holiday, travel, temporarily carrying on business, or investigating the possibilities of settlement - those are the four purposes the Act names for a visitor's permit
- No employment, paid or unpaid, without the Minister's permission in writing
- An extension bought at an Immigration Office before the permit expires, if you are staying beyond the period granted
In detail
Six months in the Act, thirty days at the counter
Section 19 of the Immigration Act is unusually generous on its face: a visitor's permit may run for up to six months, and the Director may extend it by further periods adding up to another six. Nothing in the section obliges the Director to grant the full period, and in practice he does not. The Immigration Department's own guidance tells arriving travellers that a visa lets them remain legal for a maximum of thirty days, and directs anyone staying longer to buy a Visitor's Permit Extension - which the same Department describes as buying an additional thirty days. The fee schedule prices that extension monthly, at BZ$200. Plan around thirty days and a monthly renewal, not around six months, and treat the statutory ceiling as what you could in principle ask for rather than what you will be given.
The visa list is a search box
The Department publishes visa requirements as a table you query by nationality rather than as a list you can read, and the table does not survive capture. We therefore do not state which passports need a visa for Belize. What the same page does say in running text is that three documents substitute for a Belize visa on a visit of up to thirty days: a valid multiple-entry visa or permanent residence card from the United States, a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, and a valid multiple-entry visa or permanent residence card from Canada. That is a narrower version of the same idea Peru operates through the Pacific Alliance - residence somewhere else standing in for a visa here.
What a visitor's permit is for
The Act names four purposes: spending a holiday, travelling, temporarily carrying on any business, trade or profession, and investigating the possibilities of settlement in Belize. The third is worth noticing, because it means short business travel does not need a separate category, and the fourth matters because a year spent legally on visitor's permits is the ordinary route into permanent residence. Employment is the line: accepting it without the Minister's written permission is a contravention of the Act and grounds to cancel the permit.
Country-level policy
Every Chapter of the Substantive Laws of Belize that you can download today is the Revised Edition 2020, and each one says on its face that it shows the law as at 31 December 2020. Amendments made since are published separately, as numbered Acts and statutory instruments, and they are not worked into the Chapter. The consequence is practical and it bites hardest on the two subjects people read about most: the Chapter on the retirement programme still prints an age of forty-five that an Act of 2023 reduced to forty, and the Chapter on CARICOM skilled persons still lists thirteen qualifying states when an Act of 2026 removed three of them. Reading the Chapter and stopping there produces a confidently wrong answer. The Chapter plus every amending Act since 2021 is the law.
The fee schedule under the Immigration Act is organised around nationality in a way nothing else in the region is. Permanent residence costs BZ$1,000 for a CARICOM citizen, BZ$1,500 for a Central American, Mexican or Dominican one, BZ$3,000 for a Commonwealth citizen, BZ$4,000 for an American, Cuban, Chinese or South American one, and BZ$6,000 for a European. Temporary residence is one fifth of whatever your band is, and a minor pays half. Entry permits work the same way: a visa for a Chinese national costs BZ$3,000 single entry against BZ$200 for most other passports. Work permits are the exception that proves the rule - they are priced by occupation and nationality is irrelevant.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of The Bahamas
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«A visitor’s permit shall entitle the holder to enter Belize within the period stated in such permit and to remain therein for such period not exceeding six months, as is stated in such permit,»The period is the Director's to set within the ceiling. The proviso that follows allows extension by further periods not exceeding six months in the aggregate.

Practical notes
The thirty-day figure is the Immigration Department's, and the six-month figure is the Act's. We publish both rather than choosing, because a reader planning a stay needs to know that the shorter number is the one applied and the longer one is the one that could be argued for.
We did not find any statutory instrument shortening the visitor's permit to thirty days. The pages we read are the Immigration Act Chapter 156, the consolidated subsidiary legislation to that Chapter, and the Department's own visa and visitor's permit pages; within those, the thirty days appears only in the Department's guidance.
Belize does not run a cumulative annual allowance of the Peruvian or Colombian kind. The six-month ceiling in section 19 attaches to the permit, and the extension allowance of six months in the aggregate attaches to that same permit, so the clock is per permit rather than per year.
Nothing we read in the Act or in the Department's visitor pages requires a visitor to hold health insurance, show a return ticket, or prove funds. That is an absence in those pages, not a survey of what an officer may ask at the border.
