Permanent Residency (R) by Accumulated Time
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Argentina on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Argentina to Colombia · Becoming a citizen
Colombia publishes exactly how long each route takes to reach permanent residency, and the spread is wide: two years on a treaty or parent visa, three as the spouse of a Colombian, five for everything else including work, pensions and investment. The table is the most useful single thing in the visa regime, because it lets you compare routes by their real length rather than by their entry requirements.
At a glance
- Mercosur or Andean migrant
- 2 years
- Parent of a Colombian
- 2 years
- Spouse of a Colombian
- 3 years
- Permanent partner of a Colombian
- 5 years
Two years longer than marriage, for the same relationship unmarried
- Worker, pensioner, investor, independent professional
- 5 years
- Continuity
- The visas must have stayed valid throughout
A lapse between visas is not merely a gap in time
Requirements
- Hold Migrant (M) visas continuously, kept valid throughout their term, for the period set for your category
- Two years: Mercosur migrant, Andean migrant, parent of a Colombian by birth or by adoption
- Three years: spouse of a Colombian
- Five years: permanent partner, refugee, worker, partner or owner, independent professional, pensioner, investor, internationalisation, and R beneficiaries
- Copies of every visa and safe-conduct you have held, which must have remained valid throughout their terms
- A certificate of migration movements from Migración Colombia
- A letter explaining your source of income for supporting yourself and any dependants
In detail
Marriage is worth two years
The same relationship, unmarried, takes five years to permanent residency rather than three. Colombia is explicit about this in a way most countries are not, and it is one of the few places where the published rules let you price a legal formality precisely.
Compare the routes by length, not by entry
Read alongside the entry requirements, this table reorders the options. The Mercosur and Andean routes are the lightest to obtain and the fastest to permanent residency at two years, but each is granted only once, so the two years have to be spent qualifying for something else. The investor route demands 350 or 650 minimum wages and still takes five years, the same as a job. If permanent residency is the goal, what gets you in matters less than what it accumulates.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Argentina
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Para el extranjero que ha permanecido en el territorio nacional como titular de las visas Migrante (M) vigentes, acumulando los tiempos que se señalan a continuación:»Our translation - not official
For a foreigner who has remained in national territory as the holder of valid Migrant (M) visas, accumulating the periods set out below:
The word vigentes is doing work: the time counts only while the visas were valid, so a lapse does not simply pause the clock.

The table is the whole of the route. Marriage is three years and an unmarried permanent partnership five, for the same relationship; parents of a Colombian and Mercosur or Andean migrants get the shortest period of all.
