Living in Ecuador on Income from Outside: the Rentista Visa and the Nomad Variant

Answer

The general rule applies to you

No exception is recorded for citizens of Colombia on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Colombia to Ecuador · Residency on passive income

Ecuador's income route is the rentista visa: two years of temporary residence, renewable without limit, against proof of monthly lawful income of at least three minimum wages - USD 1,446 a month in 2026. Unusually for the region, the regulation lets that income come from Ecuadorian as well as foreign sources, so an Ecuadorian rental contract counts. A separate sub-category, the rentista para trabajo remoto that the ministry markets as the Visa Nómada, applies the same three-wage test to foreign-source earnings and lets you satisfy it annually instead of monthly. Both require health insurance valid for the whole visa period.

At a glance

Income threshold
3 minimum wages a month - USD 1,446 in 2026CALC (calculated by us, not published)as of 2026-01-01

Derived: the instrument states the threshold in Salarios Básicos Unificados. The SBU for 2026 is USD 482, fixed by Acuerdo Ministerial MDT-2025-195, which is cited as a source on this fact. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so the figure moves only when the wage is reset each January, not with an exchange rate.

Remote-work variant, annual alternative
36 minimum wages a year - USD 17,352 in 2026CALC (calculated by us, not published)as of 2026-01-01

Where the income may come from
Abroad or from Ecuadorian sources

The regulation says 'en el exterior o en territorio ecuatoriano'. The remote-work variant is narrower and requires foreign-source income.

Visa length
2 years, renewable on multiple occasions
Health insurance
Required for the whole visa period
Each dependent
USD 250 of additional monthly income

Article 63 of the Reglamento a la Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana writes it out - doscientos cincuenta (250) dólares estadounidenses - and, unlike the main threshold, states it as a fixed sum rather than as a multiple of the minimum wage, so it does not move with the January wage settlement.

Fee
USD 50 to apply, USD 270 on grant
Route to permanent residence
21 continuous months as a resident

From the general rule in article 63 numeral 1 of the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana and article 83 numeral 1 of its Reglamento, which apply to every resident category rather than to this one. Continuity has its own definition in article 84 of the Reglamento: no more than ninety days outside Ecuador across the whole life of the temporary visa.

Figures marked CALC are our arithmetic, not a figure in any instrument. Where the law states a threshold as a multiple of something else, the amount shown is that multiple applied - and it moves when the underlying figure does.

Requirements

  • Proof of monthly lawful income in your own name of at least three Salarios Básicos Unificados - rental contracts, investment certificates and similar documents are the examples the regulation gives
  • For the remote-work variant: foreign-source income of at least three minimum wages a month for the three months before the application, or 36 minimum wages over the year, evidenced by international bank statements
  • For the remote-work variant: documents showing you work for, or own, a business or client domiciled abroad
  • Health insurance, Ecuadorian or foreign, valid for the same period as the visa; a foreign policy must state that it covers Ecuador
  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • A criminal record certificate from your country of origin or of residence over the last five years, apostilled or legalised, no more than 180 days old at your last entry
  • Payment of the fee set by the human mobility authority
  • An extra USD 250 of monthly income for each dependent brought under the visa

In detail

Ecuadorian income counts, which is unusual

Most of the region's income visas insist the money arrives from abroad. Argentina's rentista requires income 'provenientes del exterior'; Ecuador's own remote-work sub-category requires 'ingresos de fuente extranjera'. The ordinary rentista does not: the regulation accepts lawful monthly income 'en el exterior o en territorio ecuatoriano', and names lease contracts as an example. Someone with an Ecuadorian rental property can qualify on Ecuadorian rent.

Two wage-linked thresholds, one dollar country

The rentista and the remote-work variant both ask for three minimum wages a month. In 2026 that is USD 1,446. The number is not exposed to a currency slide, because Ecuador uses the US dollar: it moves once a year, in January, when the Ministerio del Trabajo fixes the Salario Básico Unificado. The 2026 figure of USD 482 was agreed unanimously by the tripartite wage council, a twelve-dollar rise on 2025.

The remote-work visa is a rentista, not a separate status

The ministry brands it the Visa Nómada, but legally it is a sub-category of rentista under article 64 of the regulation: same two-year length, same insurance requirement, same USD 250 per dependent. What differs is the source test - foreign income only - the option to prove 36 minimum wages annually rather than three monthly, and a requirement that the applicant's nationality appears on a list drawn up by the Ministerio de Turismo. The ministry's page records that the list, set by two 2022 official letters, covers all countries.

Country-level policy

Every Threshold Is Written in Minimum Wages, and the Wage Is Reset Each January

Ecuador does not put dollar figures in its immigration rules. It writes them as multiples of the Salario Básico Unificado, the monthly minimum wage, which the Ministerio del Trabajo fixes by ministerial agreement each December for the year ahead. The rentista and pension thresholds are three wages, the investor threshold is a hundred, the customs ceiling on work equipment is a hundred and sixty, the tourist extension fee is a third of one, and the overstay penalty is one. For 2026 the wage is USD 482, twelve dollars above 2025. Because Ecuador uses the US dollar, none of these figures drifts between settlements - which is the opposite of the position in Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru or Uruguay, where a dollar-denominated threshold moves with the exchange rate every day.

The Five-Year Temporary Fiscal Residence Regime

Since December 2023 a newcomer who has never been an Ecuadorian tax resident can elect a regime that taxes only Ecuadorian-source income for five years, and the same law attaches a five-year temporary residence visa to it instead of the ordinary two. The entry ticket is either USD 150,000 invested in Ecuadorian property or productive activity, held for five years, or proven non-Ecuadorian income of USD 2,500 a month together with enrolment in Ecuadorian social security for the whole stay. Both have to be in place within 120 days of first entering the country, which makes this a decision to take before arriving rather than after settling in.

What applies to you

Nothing changes for a citizen of Colombia

We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

Our translation - not official

Rentista: for a person who has their own resources brought in from abroad, the income these produce, or any other lawful income from an external source, or who has resources of Ecuadorian source;

The closing clause matters and is easy to lose. Argentina's rentista income must come from abroad - 'provenientes del exterior'. Ecuador's need not.

Our translation - not official

For the issue of the rentista category, in addition to the general requirements set out in the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana, the applicant must present documents certifying monthly lawful income in their own name abroad or in Ecuadorian territory, such as lease contracts, investment certificates and similar, equal to or greater than three (3) Salarios Básicos Unificados of the worker in general, which must be apostilled if issued in a country party to the Hague Apostille Convention, and legalised if issued in a country that is not party to that convention.

The threshold is expressed in minimum wages, so it moves every January without any instrument about immigration changing.

Practical notes

The rentista fee appears on the ministry's page as USD 50 to apply and USD 270 on grant, priced under heading 8.5.1 of the 2023 consular tariff as a 'lucrative category'. Over-65s pay half and holders of an Ecuadorian disability card of 30 per cent or more pay nothing.

Applications run only through the ministry's e-Visas platform, and an application that is not paid for by 23h55 on the day it is filed is deleted and has to be re-entered.

The regulation nowhere states how many months of income statements an ordinary rentista must show; only the remote-work variant specifies three months. The ministry may ask for more under the catch-all 'demás documentos que la autoridad requiera'.

A rentista who wants to go on to permanent residence must watch absences: the regulation allows no more than 90 days outside Ecuador across the whole life of the temporary visa, which is stricter than the statute's own rule that temporary residence does not limit time spent abroad.
