Retiring to Peru on the Rentista Status

Answer

The general rule applies to you

No exception is recorded for citizens of Mexico on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Mexico to Peru · Residency as a retiree

Peru has no separate pensioner visa. A retirement pension is one of the two things the rentista status accepts, alongside a permanent income, and the two are handled by the same procedure with the same US$ 1,000 monthly threshold for foreign income. For a pensioner the route is unusually clean: the regulation asks for proof of a lifetime pension, which is precisely what a pension certificate is, and the permission granted is indefinite rather than renewable.

The regulation delegates the amount to an administrative act of the migration service, and that act was not located. The figure appears only on the agency's procedure page and rests on that authority alone.

Article 92 of the Reglamento, quoted here in both its numerals, conditions the status on receiving a retirement pension or a permanent income and states no age. Migraciones repeats the condition in the same terms on its own page.

Requirements

  • A retirement pension from a Peruvian or a foreign source
  • Proof of a minimum net permanent income of US$ 1,000 per month where the pension is paid from abroad
  • A sworn declaration that the money enters Peru through a bank or financial institution supervised by the SBS
  • No police, criminal or judicial record in your country of origin or in countries you lived in over the previous five years
  • Documents issued abroad legalised by the Peruvian consulate and the foreign ministry, or apostilled, and translated into Spanish

In detail

Cheaper than the neighbours, and indefinite

Argentina asks a retiree for five monthly minimum wages, indexed and therefore moving several times a year, and gives a renewable one-year permit. Colombia asks three minimum wages and a certificate showing a lifetime monthly payment, and gives a migrant visa that takes five years to convert to permanent residency. Uruguay has no threshold but no dedicated route either - a pension is simply one accepted proof of means. Peru names a flat US$ 1,000 and grants an indefinite permission at the first attempt, which on these four is the shortest path from pension to settled status.

Country-level policy

How Leaving Peru Ends Your Residency

Every Peruvian residence status, including the indefinite ones, is lost by a long enough absence - and the test is continuous absence, not a quota of days you must spend here. More than 183 consecutive days out of the country in a 365-day period, counted from your first departure, ends the status. There is a permit that suspends the rule, and it has to be applied for before the 183 days are up, which is the part that is usually discovered too late.

The Interpol Record Check and the Rulings About It

Most changes of migration status from inside Peru, and every naturalisation application, require a Ficha de Canje Internacional - a record check issued by Interpol's Lima office, valid for six months. Peru's competition authority twice declared it an illegal bureaucratic barrier, and a Lima court then suspended those rulings at the interior ministry's request. Migraciones has been asking for it again since June 2024. The practical lesson is that Peruvian procedure requirements can be removed and reinstated by bodies other than the one running the procedure.

What applies to you

Nothing changes for a citizen of Mexico

We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

What the law says

«MIGRACIONES otorga esta calidad migratoria a las personas extranjeras que goza de pensión de jubilación o renta permanente de fuente peruana o extranjera.»

Our translation - not official

MIGRACIONES grants this migration status to foreign persons who enjoy a retirement pension or permanent income of Peruvian or foreign source.

The grammatical slip ('las personas extranjeras que goza') is the publisher's and is kept as printed.

About this source

Grants and adjudicates migration status and naturalisation, and publishes the procedure pages with fees, channels and decision times.

Standing: Applies the rule

Cannot be cited for: Not the text of the law - its pages are the agency's restatement and routinely disagree with both the legislative decree and its regulation on tourist extensions and on family permit duration. It carries thresholds that exist nowhere else and therefore cannot be corroborated; treat those as claims by the agency. Its two pages on the same regional agreement give different nationality lists, so no single page is safe as the list.

Practical notes

The published US$ 1,000 applies expressly to income from abroad. For a Peruvian-source pension the requirement is proof of the monthly permanent income, with no amount named.

The regulation asks for a 'pensión vitalicia' - a lifetime pension. A drawdown arrangement that can be exhausted is not obviously that, and we have found nothing published by Migraciones addressing the point.

The dollar figure is set by administrative act of Migraciones rather than by decree, so it can move without any change to the law.

Migraciones publishes a change-of-status procedure for people already in Peru as well as the visa route from abroad; the change-of-status route also requires an Interpol record check.
