Ninety Per Cent of the Median Wage, Written Into the Act Itself, With a Shorter List Allowed Seventy-Five

Answer

The general rule applies to you

No exception is recorded for citizens of Venezuela on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

127 exceptions recorded across 48 countries · none match Venezuela to Sweden · Residency through work

Sweden's work permit turns on a salary figure that the Aliens Act states as a formula rather than an amount. Chapter 6, section 2 requires an employment contract, pay of at least 90 per cent of the median wage in Sweden at the time of the application, terms no worse than a Swedish collective agreement or the practice of the trade, and, for a stay of up to a year, comprehensive health insurance. Two things sit beside that. The Aliens Ordinance names occupations where the salary requirement does not apply and 75 per cent of the median applies instead - a list of twenty-four codes running from IT support technicians to assistant nurses, welders and forestry workers - and a separate rule for young technology and life-science companies. The same Ordinance bans work permits outright for two occupations: personal assistants and forest berry pickers. The permit must be applied for and granted before entry, runs for at most two years at a time, and is tied to one employer for the first two years and to one kind of work after that.

At a glance

Salary requirement
90 per cent of the median wage in Sweden when you apply

Chapter 6, section 5 of the Aliens Ordinance, which identifies both by SSYK 2012 code.

Length of a permit
Two years at most, and never longer than the employment

Chapter 6, section 2 a of the Aliens Act.

Tied to an employer
Yes for the first two years, then to a kind of work

Chapter 6, section 2 a, second paragraph of the Aliens Act.

Where you must apply from
Outside Sweden, before entry

Chapter 6, section 4 of the Aliens Act, subject to the exceptions in chapter 5, section 18.

Permanent residence

Chapter 5, section 5, first paragraph of the Aliens Act, read with the self-support and conduct conditions in section 7.

Job-seeking permit after an advanced degree

Requirements

  • An offer of employment, in a contract, before you travel
  • Pay of at least 90 per cent of the median wage in Sweden as published when you apply, or 75 per cent for the occupations the Ordinance lists
  • Terms no worse than a Swedish collective agreement or the practice of the occupation or industry
  • Comprehensive health insurance valid in Sweden, if the stay will be a year or less
  • Application made and granted before entering Sweden

Country-level policy

Every Swedish Door Now Has a Money Test on It, and They Are All Measured Differently

Sweden has spent 2026 attaching an income condition to things that previously had none, and the conditions do not use the same yardstick. Permanent residence requires the applicant to be able to support themselves, measured by the Aliens Ordinance against the reserved amount on attachment of earnings. Family reunification requires the sponsor to support both parties and to have a home of sufficient size and standard, measured at 1.30 times the normal amount on attachment of earnings plus the housing cost. Naturalisation, since 6 June 2026, requires an income of at least three income base amounts a year and no more than six months of social assistance in the last three. A work permit requires pay of at least 90 per cent of the median wage. Four tests, four different base figures, and three of them are statutory amounts fixed annually by instruments this record does not reach. None of them is stated in kronor in the law itself.

What applies to you

Nothing changes for a citizen of Venezuela

We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

The Swedish parliament's public database of the Svensk författningssamling, serving every Act and ordinance as a single consolidated page at a stable address of the form /sv/dokument-och-lagar/dokument/svensk-forfattningssamling/<slug>_sfs-YYYY-NNN/. Each record prints the SFS number, the department responsible, the date of issue and an Ändrad line naming the last amending SFS incorporated, and each amended section carries in its own body the Act that gave it its present wording. Provisions not yet in force are printed alongside the current text and marked /Träder i kraft I:<date>/, and repealed sections are kept in place reading Har upphävts genom lag (YYYY:NNN), so the page shows what has gone as well as what is there. Transitional provisions are printed at the foot under Övergångsbestämmelser, but only for those amending Acts that have them.

Standing: Maintains the text in force

Cannot be cited for: The Ändrad line names the last amendment incorporated. It is not a sweep date and must not be recorded as a consolidation cut-off: it says nothing about when the page was last checked against the statute book. The consolidations are unofficial - the authentic text is the Svensk författningssamling as published by the Government Offices - and riksdagen prints a link to the Government Offices' own full text beside each record. An amending Act's own entry-into-force date is usually not on the page at all: where the Act has no transitional provisions, the date has to be read in the SFS as published. Where a section exists in several future versions the page prints them all, so an article number alone does not identify the text in force. The site is a Next.js application serving the whole statute inside the initial HTML; the extraction service returns nothing at all for some of the larger documents, which has to be met with a direct fetch rather than read as an absence.

«För att uppfylla lönekravet ska du ha en månadslön på minst 34 470 kronor. Det motsvarar 90 procent av den aktuella medianlönen som SCB publicerar i juni varje år.»

The agency's translation of the statutory percentage into a figure, with the source of the median and the month it changes.

About this source

The Swedish Migration Agency, which decides residence permits, work permits, visas and citizenship. Its site publishes, per application category, the conditions it applies, the documents it asks for, the fee, and the monetary thresholds that the Aliens Act and the Aliens Ordinance leave to it - the maintenance figure for students, the salary figure corresponding to the statutory percentage of the median wage, and the capital a self-employed applicant must hold. It carries a dated news archive that is the quickest way to learn an amending Act's commencement date, and a complete sitemap at /sitemap.xml.

Standing: Applies the rule

Cannot be cited for: It is the agency describing the law it applies, not the law. Where a page states a requirement that no instrument states - the 200,000 kronor a self-employed applicant must hold, the 51 per cent shareholding, the 700 kronor a day for a visitor - that is the agency's practice and must be cited as the agency's, never as the Aliens Act's. Its figures are dated by the year of application and move annually, so a figure quoted without its year is already wrong. The agency publishes no page at all for the self-support ground in chapter 5, section 5, third paragraph of the Aliens Act: its application menu has no category for it, which is a fact about the agency's presentation and not about the provision. News items are announcements rather than instruments and corroborate a date at best.

Practical notes

The 34,470 kronor figure is the agency's, not the Act's, and it moves every June when Statistics Sweden publishes a new median. The rule that does not move is the 90 per cent.

The salary requirement is a floor and not a safe harbour. Meeting 90 per cent of the median still leaves the second condition, which can require more where a collective agreement for the occupation pays better.

The twenty-four occupations on the 75 per cent list were read in the Ordinance. They are stated as SSYK 2012 codes, so whether a particular job is on the list is a classification question and not a judgement about the work.

    About this source
