Retiring to Uruguay
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Argentina on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Argentina to Uruguay · Residency as a retiree
There is no separate retiree visa. A pension is one of the listed ways of proving means of support on the ordinary permanent residency route, alongside employment and business income, and it is treated no differently from any of them. That means no dedicated threshold, no medical certificate, and permanent residency rather than a renewable temporary permit.
At a glance
- Dedicated retiree route
- None
Pensioners appear on the migration directorate's permanent residence page as one bullet among the ways of proving income, quoted here, beside employees, sole traders and company owners. The page opens no route of its own for them.
- How it is handled
- As one way of proving means of support for permanent residency
- Income threshold
- None published
The same page states the test as a monthly nominal income sufficient for maintenance and names no figure, for a pensioner or for anyone else.
- Medical certificate
- Not required for this route as such
A health card is required of every applicant, which is a different document
- What you get
- Permanent residency
Not a temporary permit to be renewed
Requirements
- Apply for ordinary permanent residency and prove means of support as a pensioner
- A notarial certificate stating that you hold that status, the nature of the income, the nominal monthly amount, and how it is received in Uruguay
- The income must be sufficient for your maintenance - there is no published figure
- The same documentation as every permanent residency application: identity, national-level criminal record certificates covering five years, vaccination certificate issued in Uruguay, health card
In detail
What a retiree gains and loses against the neighbours
Argentina and Colombia both run dedicated pension routes with published thresholds - five and three monthly minimum wages respectively - and both grant a temporary permit that has to be renewed, with Colombia adding a medical certificate and proof of health cover. Uruguay has no threshold to clear and no separate category, and the application is for permanent residency directly. The trade is certainty: in Argentina or Colombia you can work out in advance whether your pension qualifies, and in Uruguay you cannot, because the standard is whether it is sufficient for your maintenance and that is decided on your file.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Argentina
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Rentista, jubilado y pensionista en el exterior: Presentar certificado notarial donde conste dicha calidad, concepto de las rentas, monto mensual nominal y como se percibe en Uruguay.»Our translation - not official
Rentier, retiree and pensioner abroad: present a notarial certificate stating that status, the nature of the income, the nominal monthly amount and how it is received in Uruguay.
Pensioners appear here as one bullet in a list of ways to prove income, next to employees, sole traders and company owners. There is no separate article for them anywhere in the residency pages we have read.

Uruguay's migration directorate, within the interior ministry. Publishes the requirement list for each residency category on gub.uy, including the Mercosur routes and the means-of-support categories.
Standing: Applies the rule
Cannot be cited for: Like its Argentine counterpart this is the administering agency's own description rather than the law. Uruguay's statute deliberately leaves periods and procedures to regulation, so these pages can change without Ley 18.250 moving at all. The pages do carry their own última actualización date, which is more than most agencies offer.

Practical notes
We have read the permanent and temporary residency pages and found no dedicated retiree category; that is the basis for saying there is none, rather than an exhaustive search of Uruguayan law.
The notarial certificate must state how the money reaches Uruguay, so the payment route is part of what is assessed rather than just the amount.
