Temporary Residency for Workers
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Italy on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Italy to Uruguay · Residency through work
Uruguay grants temporary residency to a foreigner with work here, and the financial bar is strikingly low: pay at or above the national minimum wage. What the process actually turns on is health documentation - a vaccination certificate issued inside Uruguay and a work health card - and on a letter from the employer certified by a notary.
At a glance
- Pay floor
- One national minimum wage
- Renewal window
- Within the 90 days before expiry
- Engagements under 180 days
- A provisional identity sheet may be used instead
- Health card
- Carné de salud laboral, required
- Vaccination certificate
- Must be issued in Uruguay
Decreto 136/2018
Requirements
- A letter on the employer's letterhead stating the activity, the length of the engagement and the monthly pay
- Pay at or above one national minimum wage
- The letter must be accompanied by a notarial certificate confirming the company's details, or by a BPS employment history record
- Valid identity document - the one you entered the country with - and a valid visa where your nationality requires one
- Criminal record certificates from your country of birth and anywhere you lived over the last five years for more than six months
- A vaccination certificate issued by a vaccination centre in Uruguay
- A valid carné de salud laboral from a health provider authorised by the Ministry of Public Health
- Foreign documents apostilled or legalised and translated by a Uruguayan public translator, except those issued by Brazil
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Italy
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Trabajadores: Carta membretada donde se especifique actividad que desarrolla y el plazo de contratación por el empleador, indicando remuneración mensual, si correspondiere o modo de manutención, la cual deberá ser igual o superior a un salario mínimo nacional.»Our translation - not official
Workers: a letter on letterhead specifying the activity carried out and the length of the engagement by the employer, stating the monthly pay, or where applicable the means of support, which must be equal to or greater than one national minimum wage.
Compare Argentina, where pay must match the sector's collective agreement and the employer must be pre-registered in a national register. Uruguay asks for a letter and a minimum wage.

Uruguay's migration directorate, within the interior ministry. Publishes the requirement list for each residency category on gub.uy, including the Mercosur routes and the means-of-support categories.
Standing: Applies the rule
Cannot be cited for: Like its Argentine counterpart this is the administering agency's own description rather than the law. Uruguay's statute deliberately leaves periods and procedures to regulation, so these pages can change without Ley 18.250 moving at all. The pages do carry their own última actualización date, which is more than most agencies offer.

«VIGENTE: (Decreto 136/2018) expedido por centro vacunatorio en Uruguay, que acredite que el extranjero cumple con el esquema de vacunación.»Our translation - not official
VALID: (Decree 136/2018) issued by a vaccination centre in Uruguay, certifying that the foreigner complies with the vaccination schedule.
Issued in Uruguay, so it cannot be arranged in advance - a sequencing constraint rather than a paperwork one.

«Para solicitar la prorroga de la residencia siempre deberá realizarse dentro de los 90 días antes del vencimiento de la misma.»Our translation - not official
An application to extend the residency must always be made within the 90 days before it expires.
The window runs backwards from expiry, so it opens rather than closes at 90 days. The directorate's own spelling, prorroga without the accent, is left as found.

Practical notes
If the work is for less than 180 days, a provisional identity sheet is the lighter route rather than a residency application.
Extensions must be requested within the 90 days before the current permission expires.
The appointment has a ten-minute lateness tolerance and the fee is not refunded if it is missed.
