Colombian Nationality Through a Parent
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Ecuador on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Ecuador to Colombia · Residency through ancestry
A child of a Colombian parent born abroad is a Colombian national by birth - but not automatically. The constitution attaches a condition: you must either take up domicile in Colombia or register at a Colombian consulate. Do one of those and the question of residency disappears entirely, because you are not a foreigner. Colombia also does not take nationality away for acquiring another one.
At a glance
- Who qualifies
- Children of a Colombian father or mother, born abroad
- The condition
- Domicile in Colombia, or consular registration
- Generational limit
- None stated in article 96
Unlike Italy, which since 2025 requires an ancestor within two degrees holding exclusively Italian citizenship
- Dual nationality
- Permitted
Nationality is not lost by acquiring another
- Who decides
- Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil
Requirements
- Have a Colombian father or mother
- Having been born abroad, either take up domicile in Colombian territory or register at a consular office of the Republic
- The Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil decides cases of Colombian nationality by birth
- Holding another nationality does not cost you Colombian nationality
- Once recognised, you enter, remain in and leave Colombia as a Colombian, identifying yourself with Colombian documents
In detail
Against Italy and Spain
This is the same idea as the Italian and Spanish ancestry routes and far simpler. Italy since 2025 requires an ancestor within two degrees who held exclusively Italian citizenship, retroactively treating everyone else as never having acquired it. Spain's Democratic Memory route turned on an ancestor having lost nationality through exile and closed in 2025. Colombia's article 96 states no generational limit and no historical qualification, and asks only that you connect yourself to the country by moving there or registering at a consulate.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Ecuador
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Los hijos de padre o madre colombianos que hubieren nacido en tierra extranjera y luego se domiciliaren en territorio colombiano o registraren en una oficina consular de la República.»Our translation - not official
The children of a Colombian father or mother who were born in foreign territory and subsequently take up domicile in Colombian territory or register at a consular office of the Republic.
The second half is the condition people miss: descent alone does not complete it. Either move, or register with a consulate.

«La calidad de nacional colombiano no se pierde por el hecho de adquirir otra nacionalidad.»Our translation - not official
The status of Colombian national is not lost by the fact of acquiring another nationality.
Which also means the obligation runs the other way: a Colombian with another passport must enter, stay and leave as a Colombian, using Colombian documents.

Practical notes
This is nationality rather than residency, so someone who qualifies does not need any of the visa categories on this site.
We have read the constitutional text as reproduced by the foreign ministry rather than the constitution itself.
