Both of You Must Be Over 24, and Your Sponsor Must Lodge 57,000 Kroner With the Municipality for Ten Years

Answer

The general rule applies to you

No exception is recorded for citizens of Guyana on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.

147 exceptions recorded across 54 countries · none match Guyana to Denmark · Residency through marriage

Section 9(1)(1) of the Aliens Act is the spouse route, and it sets an age on both sides: the applicant must be over 24 and the person living in Denmark must be over 24 as well. The sponsor must be a Danish national, a national of another Nordic country, a refugee, a holder of temporary protected status of more than two years' standing, or someone who has held permanent residence for more than the last three years. The permit is a may rather than a shall. On top of the usual support undertaking, the sponsor must lodge financial security of 57,000 kroner with the municipality for ten years against future public assistance to the applicant - a figure fixed at 2024 levels and adjusted every 1 January - and the municipality may reduce it once the applicant passes a Danish test at A1 or A2 level.

Verified with official sourceMonitor - can change2026-10-10

At a glance

Minimum age
24, on both sides

Section 9(1)(1) of the Aliens Act, which puts the figure on the applicant and on the person living in Denmark.

Financial security the sponsor lodges
57,000 kroner, held for ten years

Section 9(4) of the Aliens Act, against future public assistance to the applicant under the Active Social Policy Act or the Integration Act.

What moves that figure
The rate-adjustment percentage, every 1 January

Section 9(4), final sentence: the amount is set at 2024 levels and adjusted from 2025 onwards.

What reduces it
A Danish test at A1 or A2 level, or an equivalent

Section 9(4), second sentence, read with sections 9(37) to (39), under which the municipality may reduce the security.

Income test where the sponsor's own basis is permanent residence
280,908.00 kroner a year on average over the last two years, as one of three alternatives

Section 9(16)(3) of the Aliens Act, at 2018 levels and adjusted every 1 January. The alternatives are a citizenship test or active citizenship, and four years of full-time work.

Permit length
Up to two years at a time, then up to four after two years and up to six after six

Section 16(2) of the Udlændingebekendtgørelsen, capped by the sponsor's own permit.

Application fee
Payable, with the amount set to cover the cost of handling it

Sections 9 h(1)(1) and 9 h(4) of the Aliens Act.

Requirements

  • Both spouses or long-standing cohabitants over 24, living together at a shared address
  • A sponsor who is Danish, Nordic, a refugee, a holder of section 7(3) protection for more than two years, or three years into permanent residence
  • An undertaking by the sponsor to support the applicant
  • Financial security of 57,000 kroner lodged with the municipality for ten years

Country-level policy

Two Parts of the Kingdom Are Foreign Territory for These Purposes, and the Statute Book Says So in Each Act Separately

The Aliens Act ends by saying it does not apply to the Faroe Islands or Greenland, and may be brought into force there only by royal decree and with the departures local conditions call for. Danish immigration law therefore stops at the Danish coast, and each new amending Act repeats the same sentence for itself. The consequence shows up in places that have nothing to do with immigration: the licence regulation treats a Faroese licence as exchangeable outright, a Greenlandic one as exchangeable only on passing a check test, and both as needing the original country of issue marked on the Danish licence - the treatment it gives to licences from outside the Union and the EEA rather than the treatment it gives to Danish ones.

Six Months Out of the Country Ends Your Permit, and Every Amount in the Act Is a Snapshot

Two things run underneath the Danish residence rules and neither sits in the record of any one route. A residence permit lapses when you give up your home in Denmark and, separately, when you have been outside the country for more than six consecutive months - twelve if the permit allows permanent residence and you have lawfully lived here more than two years, or if you hold permanent residence. That is a continuous-absence rule and not a presence quota: two absences of five months each break neither limb. And almost every amount printed in the Aliens Act is adjusted once a year. The salary thresholds move with the rate-adjustment percentage plus an adjustment percentage tracking wage growth and are rounded to the nearest thousand; the family-reunification security is set at 2024 levels and adjusted every 1 January; the permanent-residence income alternative is set at 2016 levels; the fees are adjusted and rounded to the nearest five kroner. The figure a reader takes from the consolidated text is the figure as it stood when the text was consolidated.

What applies to you

Nothing changes for a citizen of Guyana

We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

The Danish state's common legal information system, run by Civilstyrelsen under the Ministry of Justice. Each document is offered in three representations off that address: the bare address, which is a JavaScript shell; /pdf, which is the publisher's own typeset PDF with a real text layer; and /dan/xml, which is the LexDania source. A consolidated Act prints on its first page the consolidation it supersedes, every amending Act folded into it, and a paragraph-by-paragraph list of the amendments it does NOT incorporate because the minister has not yet set their commencement date. The XML carries a metadata block with the accession number, the signature date, a Status field reading Valid or Historic, and a Change block naming each amending instrument.

Standing: Maintains the text in force

Cannot be cited for: The address itself serves a 4.8 KB React shell and no text; a reading taken from it is page furniture, not the law. The XML representation of older documents can be metadata only: Danmarks Riges Grundlov, the Constitution that Danish naturalisation rests on, has a record with a title and a status and no text at all, and its /pdf address answers 404. The free-text parameter of the public search API is ignored, so the service can be filtered by document type and ministry but not searched by word from outside the browser. A document marked Historic may still be operative: the 2014 regulation listing the countries whose driving licences exchange without a test is marked Historic because the 2016 regulation repealed it, and the 2016 regulation's own transitional provision keeps its list in force. The StartDate and EndDate fields in the XML are record-keeping dates and are not the validity period of the instrument - they must not be read as a commencement or a repeal. The service publishes what has been enacted and nothing about how an agency applies it: the Positive List, the unemployment level that opens one of the salary routes, the driving-licence exchange list and the annually adjusted amounts are all published elsewhere by the administering body.

Practical notes

The attachment requirement, the housing requirement and the Danish-test deadlines that also sit in section 9 were not quoted here. This record covers the age, the sponsor categories, the support undertaking and the security.

Union and EEA citizens and their family members are outside this route. Section 2(3) of the Act makes its limits yield to the Union's rules.
