Permanent Residence Through an Ecuadorian Relative
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Colombia on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Colombia to Ecuador · Residency through ancestry
Ecuador has no ancestry visa in the European sense, but it has something that does much of the same work and is faster: a relative up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity of an Ecuadorian citizen goes straight to permanent residence, with no waiting period and no temporary stage. Second degree reaches parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren and siblings, and by affinity the equivalents through a spouse. What is asked for is documentary proof of the relationship; the Ecuadorian relative shows lawful means and, for adult dependants beyond the first degree, USD 250 of extra monthly income each.
At a glance
- Status granted
- Permanent residence, directly
- Waiting period
- None - there is no temporary stage to serve first
- Degree of kinship
- Up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity
- Who the relative can be
- An Ecuadorian citizen, or a foreigner with permanent residence in Ecuador
- Extra income per dependant
- USD 250 a month, beyond the first degree
Article 87 of the Reglamento a la Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana, which requires the sponsor to show additional monthly income of doscientos cincuenta (250) dólares on top of lawful means of living.
- Chaining
- Not allowed - a person admitted this way cannot in turn sponsor their own relatives
Requirements
- A relationship up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity with an Ecuadorian citizen, or with a foreigner holding permanent residence in Ecuador
- Documents establishing the relationship, apostilled or legalised, and translated into Spanish where necessary
- The Ecuadorian or permanently resident relative to evidence lawful means of support
- For relatives beyond the first degree, and for adults, an extra USD 250 of monthly income per person covered
- The general residence requirements: valid passport, clean criminal record, no security objection, and the fee
In detail
Not an ancestry visa, but it behaves like one
Nothing in Ecuadorian law grants residence for having an Ecuadorian grandparent in the abstract. What it grants is permanent residence to a relative of an Ecuadorian citizen up to the second degree, and a grandparent is in the second degree. The practical difference from an Italian or Spanish ancestry route is that the Ecuadorian relative has to exist now: this is family reunification measured in degrees of kinship, not a claim inherited from a dead ancestor.
Second degree, in both directions
Consanguinity counts steps through births: parents and children are first degree, grandparents, grandchildren and siblings are second. Affinity counts the same steps through a spouse, so a spouse's parents and siblings are included. Anything further out - an uncle, a cousin, a great-grandparent - is third degree or beyond and does not qualify.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Colombia
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Ser pariente hasta el segundo grado de consanguinidad o afinidad de un ciudadano ecuatoriano o de un ciudadano extranjero con residencia permanente en el Ecuador.»Our translation - not official
To be a relative up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity of an Ecuadorian citizen or of a foreign citizen with permanent residence in Ecuador.
This is a condition for permanent residence itself, not a temporary category. It sits alongside the 21-month route in the same article, which is why it skips the waiting period entirely.

A foreign person related up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity to an Ecuadorian citizen or to a foreign citizen with permanent residence in Ecuador must present, in addition to the general requirements set out in the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana, the documents that allow the relationship between the applicant and the Ecuadorian or foreign person to be established, in accordance with the rules in force on the matter.

The beneficiary of the sponsorship may not rely on this article to sponsor their own relatives.
The chain stops at one link. A grandchild admitted through an Ecuadorian grandparent cannot then bring in their own relatives on the same basis.

Practical notes
Where the relationship is with a child who is a minor or with a dependent person with a disability, the statute treats that as a separate ground for permanent residence, with its own documentary requirements, rather than as part of this one.
The requirement that the sponsor show lawful means falls on the Ecuadorian relative, not on the applicant. For first-degree relatives who are minors, university students or disabled, the regulation asks for lawful means alone and not the extra USD 250.
We could not fetch the ministry's dedicated trámite page for this category - the request failed twice at the fetching service - so the fee for this route is not stated here. The general permanent-residence fee published for the 21-month route is USD 50 to apply and USD 225 on grant, and we do not assume it is the same.
