Studying in Mexico
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Guatemala on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Guatemala to Mexico · Residency as a student
A student gets temporary residence as a student, renewable each year until the course ends. The money test is the lowest of any residence route - 220 days of the UMA a month, or 2,290 days in savings, and it can be met by a parent, a guardian, a scholarship letter or a bank's financing certificate. One rule catches people out: this status cannot be reached from inside Mexico. Someone who arrives as a visitor and then enrols has to leave and apply at a consulate, because the guidelines say in terms that the change cannot be made in national territory.
At a glance
- Status
- Temporary resident student
- Card validity
- 365 calendar days, renewable until the course ends
- Income test
- Above 220 days of UMA a month for the last 3 monthsas of 2025-08-09
- Savings test
- An average monthly balance of 2,290 days of UMA over the last 3 monthsas of 2025-08-09
The Lineamientos write the multiple in words and in UMA, never in pesos. The digits here are ours; any peso equivalent is ours too and is marked as such.
- Income test in pesos
- MXN 25,808.20 a monthCALC (calculated by us, not published)as of 2026-02-01
Our arithmetic: the multiple from the Lineamientos times the daily UMA of MXN 117.31 published by INEGI in the Diario Oficial on 9 January 2026 and in force from 1 February 2026. It changes every February.
- Mexican government scholarship holders
- Exempt from the money test
- Can it be obtained inside Mexico
- No - the visa must be obtained at a consulate before travelling
- Work
- Allowed with a separate permission, and only in work related to the field of study
- Family
- The student's family can apply for temporary residence visas alongside
Figures marked CALC are our arithmetic, not a figure in any instrument. Where the law states a threshold as a multiple of something else, the amount shown is that multiple applied - and it moves when the underlying figure does.
Requirements
- An acceptance letter from an institution belonging to the national education system, naming the level, grade and field of study, the course, its start and end dates, the tuition cost, and the institution's identifying details
- Either net monthly income from employment, a pension or a scholarship above 220 days of the UMA over the last three months, or an average monthly balance of 2,290 days of the UMA over the same period
- The money may be shown by the applicant, a parent, or whoever holds parental authority or guardianship, provided they are not over twenty-five, or by a scholarship letter or a bank financing certificate
- A passport valid under international law and in force, and a consular interview
- An application to the Institute for the residence card within 30 calendar days of arriving
- A separate application to the Institute for permission to work, which only covers work related to the field of study
In detail
The one status you cannot switch into
The guidelines are explicit that a person whose sole purpose is to study must hold the student visa, and that the status cannot be obtained by changing status inside Mexico. That makes the student route different from almost everything else in the Mexican system, where a change of status is at least theoretically available. Enrolling first and sorting the paperwork later does not work here.
Renewal is open-ended, unlike ordinary temporary residence
The ordinary temporary resident card stops at four years in total. The student card is issued for 365 days and renewed as many times as the studies take - a doctorate does not hit a ceiling. The other direction is open too: a student may change to ordinary temporary residence at any time.
Where the money can come from
The test can be satisfied by the student, by their parents, or by whoever holds parental authority or guardianship, provided those people are not over twenty-five - a drafting quirk worth reading twice, since it appears to limit who may vouch rather than who may be vouched for. A scholarship letter from the institution or a financing certificate from a bank also works, and a Mexican government scholarship removes the test altogether.
Country-level policy
No Mexican immigration threshold is written in pesos. They are all multiples of the Unidad de Medida y Actualización, a unit the statistics institute recalculates each January by the previous year's inflation and publishes in the official gazette, in force from 1 February. The unit exists because a 2016 constitutional reform forbade using the minimum wage as a unit of account and converted every such reference into the UMA - which is why the 2014 visa guidelines, written in days of minimum wage, were replaced in 2025 by guidelines written in days of UMA at about 2.3 times the multiple.
Mexican consular practice runs on a single administrative instrument, the General Guidelines for the issue of visas, issued jointly by the interior and foreign ministries. The version that stood from 2014 to 2025 is the source of almost every figure still in circulation, and it was repealed outright on 9 August 2025. New guidelines took its place, restating every money threshold in UMA, adding an electronic visa, and dropping the photograph and photocopy requirements. An amendment in May 2026 added an unpaid high-specialisation expert route, rewrote what a job offer must say, and told consulates in terms that they may not ask for more than the rules require.
A Mexican residence visa is not a residence permit. It gets you to the border once, within 180 days of issue, and the entry form you receive there is valid for thirty calendar days. In those thirty days you must apply to the Institute, at the office covering your address in Mexico, for the card that actually evidences your status. Miss it and the visa is spent: what remains is a regularisation procedure with its own fee. The same thirty-day rule is in the migration law, in the procedural guidelines and in the user information of every residence visa procedure.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Guatemala
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Autoriza al extranjero para permanecer en el territorio nacional por el tiempo que duren los cursos, estudios, proyectos de investigación o formación que acredite que va a realizar en instituciones educativas pertenecientes al sistema educativo nacional»Our translation - not official
Authorises the foreigner to remain in national territory for as long as the courses, studies, research projects or training he proves he is going to undertake at educational institutions belonging to the national education system last
The institution has to belong to the national education system. A language school or a private course outside that system does not support this status.

Cannot be cited for: Nothing below statute level is here. It is also not an authority on when a reform took effect: the transitional articles of the amending decree live in the Diario Oficial, not here. And its standard pdf/ edition is not safe to extract: a reading of the Ley de Migración from it silently dropped 21 of 162 articles, including article 52, the one listing every migration status. Mexico's official gazette. An instrument takes effect on publication here, and the visa guidelines, the acuerdos that amend them and the annual UMA values all appear here first and sometimes only here.
Standing: Issues the instrument
Cannot be cited for: It publishes instruments as enacted and never consolidates them. The 2025 visa guidelines and the 2026 acuerdo amending them are two separate documents with no merged text anywhere, so what the rule says today has to be assembled by hand. An article number inside an amending acuerdo - ARTÍCULO ÚNICO, Transitorio Tercero - is an instruction to amend, not an article of the resulting instrument. Its HTML conversion also drops the space at many line breaks, so stored text contains run-together words and, in preambles, whole paragraphs without spaces; a quotation carrying such a join is reproducing the publisher exactly and must say so. Note that www.dof.gob.mx fails TLS validation while dof.gob.mx works.

«La tarjeta de residente temporal estudiante tendrá una vigencia de trescientos sesenta y cinco díasnaturales.»Our translation - not official
The temporary resident student card shall be valid for three hundred and sixty-five calendar days.
Renewable as many times as the studies require, unlike the ordinary temporary resident card which stops at four years. The Diario Oficial's HTML edition drops the space at some line breaks, which is why words run together inside this quotation. It is quoted as the publisher renders it rather than tidied.

Practical notes
Permission to work is applied for at the Institute, not at the consulate, and is tied to work related to the field of study.
Family members of a student apply for ordinary temporary residence visas, not student ones, and the sponsor shows means of 220 days of UMA a month for each of them.
We did not read any education ministry page on which institutions belong to the national education system; the requirement is quoted from the migration law and the guidelines.
