Formación Residency for Students
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Colombia on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Colombia to Peru · Residency as a student
A year of renewable residency for study at a recognised institution, and the category is wide: school, technical and vocational training, undergraduate and postgraduate university study, work-based training schemes and student exchanges all sit inside it. The condition that catches people is duration - whatever you enrol on must be documented as running a year or more. Study does not permit work, but Peru answers that with an instrument the other countries here do not have: an extraordinary work permit that, for students, runs for the whole residence period and allows half-time work.
At a glance
- Length of permission
- 365 days, extendable for the same period
The regulation writes the figure in words - trescientos sesenta y cinco (365) días - in article 83.2, and article 83.3 gives the extension the same length.
- Minimum course duration
- 1 year
- Financial test
- A sworn declaration of means, with no amount named
- Work
- Not permitted without an extraordinary work permit
- Extraordinary work permit for students
- Granted for the whole approved residence period, half-time work
The general version of the same permit runs only 60 days
- Fee
- S/ 58.80as of 2024-06-17
Stated on Migraciones' procedure page for this route, paid under code 07567.
- Decision time
- 30 working days
Migraciones publishes this as the plazo de atención: working days, not calendar days.
Requirements
- Proof of the study or training arrangement, showing a duration of one year or more
- For school, technical, higher or university study: an enrolment certificate from an institution recognised by the Peruvian state, naming you and stating the duration
- For work-based training schemes: an accreditation letter from the legal representative of the body where the training takes place
- For student exchanges: an accreditation letter from the receiving university or educational institution
- A sworn declaration of financial means covering the period of the status, signed by a parent or guardian if you are a minor
- No police, criminal or judicial record in your country of origin or in countries you lived in over the previous five years
- Documents issued abroad legalised or apostilled and translated into Spanish by a certified or sworn public translator
In detail
The part-time work permit is the distinguishing feature
Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay all place students in a status that does not permit work and leave the exceptions to labour law or to nothing at all. Peru's regulation carves students out of the ordinary sixty-day extraordinary work permit and gives them one that runs the full length of the residence and authorises half-time hours. It is still a permit that has to be applied for, and it requires an identity document already in hand, but it is a published entitlement rather than a grey area.
Country-level policy
Every Peruvian residence status, including the indefinite ones, is lost by a long enough absence - and the test is continuous absence, not a quota of days you must spend here. More than 183 consecutive days out of the country in a 365-day period, counted from your first departure, ends the status. There is a permit that suspends the rule, and it has to be applied for before the 183 days are up, which is the part that is usually discovered too late.
Most changes of migration status from inside Peru, and every naturalisation application, require a Ficha de Canje Internacional - a record check issued by Interpol's Lima office, valid for six months. Peru's competition authority twice declared it an illegal bureaucratic barrier, and a Lima court then suspended those rulings at the interior ministry's request. Migraciones has been asking for it again since June 2024. The practical lesson is that Peruvian procedure requirements can be removed and reinstated by bodies other than the one running the procedure.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Colombia
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«No permite trabajar ni realizar actividades remuneradas ni lucrativas, salvo la previa emisión del Permiso de Trabajo Extraordinario otorgado por MIGRACIONES.»Our translation - not official
It does not permit working or carrying out paid or profit-making activities, save upon the prior issue of the Extraordinary Work Permit granted by MIGRACIONES.
The exception is in the same sentence as the prohibition. The 2017 original of this sub-paragraph omitted the word 'salvo', producing a sentence that read as a flat ban; DL 1582 repaired it.

«Excepcionalmente, para los extranjeros con calidad migratoria de Formación, se otorga por el plazo de residencia aprobado y permite laborar en jornadas de medio tiempo»Our translation - not official
Exceptionally, for foreigners holding Formación migration status, it is granted for the approved residence period and permits working half-time.
The ordinary extraordinary work permit lasts sixty calendar days. For students it lasts as long as the residence, which turns it from a stopgap into a standing right to part-time work.

«Copia simple de la constancia de matrícula expedida por el centro de estudios, reconocida por el Estado peruano, indicando nombres y apellidos del solicitante, así como el tiempo de duración de estudios igual o superior a un (1) año.»Our translation - not official
A plain copy of the enrolment certificate issued by the place of study, recognised by the Peruvian state, stating the applicant's names and surnames and a study duration equal to or greater than one (1) year.
The one-year minimum repeats for every mode - exchange, work-based training and formal enrolment alike - so a single semester abroad does not reach this category.

Standing: Applies the rule
Cannot be cited for: Not the text of the law - its pages are the agency's restatement and routinely disagree with both the legislative decree and its regulation on tourist extensions and on family permit duration. It carries thresholds that exist nowhere else and therefore cannot be corroborated; treat those as claims by the agency. Its two pages on the same regional agreement give different nationality lists, so no single page is safe as the list.

Practical notes
Migraciones publishes both a visa route from abroad and a change-of-status route from inside Peru, with different requirement lists.
The financial test is a sworn declaration rather than a bank balance, and neither Migraciones nor the regulation names a figure.
The work permit requires a carné temporal migratorio, carné de identidad or carné de extranjería, so it cannot be obtained before the residence document itself.
We have not read the rules on transferring from student status to worker status at the end of a course.
