Studying in Ecuador

The student category runs from basic schooling to postgraduate study and covers professional internships as well as classroom study, including language schools teaching Ecuador's official languages. The visa is cut to the length of the programme, with a floor of six months in the statute and a ceiling of two years in the regulation, so a longer degree is renewed rather than granted in one piece. Proof of means may come from a parent for students up to 21, or from a scholarship letter covering tuition and living costs.

At a glance

Visa length
The length of the programme, capped at 2 years
Statutory floor
The visa may not be shorter than six months
What counts as study
Basic, secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate study, official-language schools, and pre-professional or professional internships
Means of support
May be shown by parents up to age 21, or by a scholarship letter
Route to permanent residence
21 continuous months as a resident, on the same terms as any other category

From the general rule in article 63 numeral 1 of the Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana and article 83 numeral 1 of its Reglamento. Continuity has its own definition in article 84 of the Reglamento: no more than ninety days outside Ecuador across the whole life of the temporary visa, which is the part a student spending summers at home is most likely to fall foul of.

Requirements

  • Enrolment or a certificate of admission from a legally accredited Ecuadorian educational institution, certifying regular student status
  • Or admission to pre-professional or professional internships
  • Proof of lawful means of support, which for students up to 21 may be provided by parents or legal representatives, or by a scholarship or stipend certificate stating that the institution covers education and residence costs
  • The general residence requirements: valid passport, clean criminal record, no security objection, and the fee
  • At renewal: updated documents relating to the studies or internship

In detail

Two years at a time

A four-year degree does not produce a four-year visa. The regulation caps the student visa at two years and ties it to the length of the programme, so a long degree means a renewal, with updated enrolment documents, in the middle of it. The statutory floor of six months matters at the other end: a one-term exchange still gets six months.

This is the general condition for permanent residence and it applies to every temporary category, not to one route. It is quoted on each record that states the twenty-one months.

Practical notes

Language schools count only where they teach the official languages of Ecuador and are officially recognised in the country - a Spanish school qualifies on its face, an English school does not.

The ministry's own page for this category lists the general requirements and points to the regulation for the specific ones; we did not find a stated processing time.

Nothing we read says whether a student may work. The statute's work category is separate and the student category is defined by the educational activity, but no page we read states a prohibition, so we do not assert one.
