Liechtenstein has no customs law of its own on this subject. The Customs Treaty of 29 March 1923 attached the territory of the Principality to the Swiss customs area and made it a part of it, and article 4 applies the whole of Swiss customs legislation in Liechtenstein in the same way as in Switzerland. Which Swiss instruments those are is published in Liechtenstein, in a notice of the government listing them by their Swiss SR numbers: the current one is of 15 September 2026 and it names the Zollgesetz of 2005 and the Zollverordnung of 2006 as applicable. So the rule on household removal goods is the Swiss one, and it is generous and specific: removal goods of a person taking up residence are duty-free, provided the things were used abroad by that person for at least six months for private life or for a trade or profession and are intended for their own continued use, and provided they are imported in temporal connection with the change of residence, with anything to follow declared at the first import.
At a glance
- Whose customs law applies
- Switzerland’s, in the same way as in Switzerland
Customs Treaty of 29 March 1923, article 4(1)(1), which applies the whole of Swiss customs legislation. Article 6 gives Liechtenstein the same legal position as a Swiss canton in respect of that legislation.
- Where the applicable Swiss instruments are listed
- In a government notice published in the Landesgesetzblatt, most recently that of 15 September 2026
LGBl. 2026 Nr. 312, made under articles 4, 7, 9 and 10 of the Customs Treaty and the Act of 20 June 1996 on the publication of Swiss provisions applicable in Liechtenstein. It names SR 631.0 (Zollgesetz) and SR 631.01 (Zollverordnung).
- Minimum prior use abroad
- Six months
Swiss Zollverordnung article 14(3)(a).
- Duty on removal goods
- None
Swiss Zollverordnung article 14(1): "Übersiedlungsgut von Zuziehenden ist zollfrei."
- Later consignments
- Must be declared at the first import
Swiss Zollverordnung article 14(2).
- Duties at the Liechtenstein-Switzerland frontier
- None may be levied, and no import or export restrictions or prohibitions may be imposed there
Customs Treaty article 1(2), unless such measures would be permissible between two Swiss cantons.
- The currency
- The Swiss franc, which Liechtenstein introduced as its currency by law
Currency Treaty of 19 June 1980, recital and article 1(1), which also applies Swiss monetary and banknote-protection law in Liechtenstein.
Requirements
- The goods were used abroad by the person moving, for at least six months, for private life or for a trade or profession
- The goods are intended for that person’s own continued use in the customs territory
- Import in temporal connection with the change of residence, with any later consignments declared at the first import
- Declaration at a Swiss customs office - the external border of the customs area, not the Liechtenstein frontier with Switzerland, which carries no duties at all
In detail
Two borders, and only one of them is a customs border
Liechtenstein sits inside the Swiss customs area and inside the Schengen area. The frontier with Switzerland is neither a customs border nor a Schengen border, and the Customs Treaty forbids levying anything there. The frontier with Austria is an internal Schengen border but the outer edge of the Swiss customs area, which is why goods arriving from the European Union are a customs matter and people arriving from it are not.
Country-level policy
Everything quoted in Liechtenstein’s records comes from Lilex, the consolidated law database of the government’s legal service at gesetze.li. Lilex says what it is: the consolidated provisions serve information only and have no legal effect. The authoritative text is elsewhere, and the Publication Act says exactly where - only the version of a provision published in the Landesgesetzblatt and electronically signed is massgebend, and for treaties and decisions of international organisations it is the texts designated authentic in them. That is a third answer to a question this corpus has now asked of three neighbours: Switzerland’s consolidations are themselves authoritative, Iceland’s gazette prevails over its code, and Liechtenstein separates the two the way Iceland does while publishing both at the same address.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Ireland
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
The territory of the Principality of Liechtenstein is attached to the Swiss customs area and forms a part of the Swiss customs area. 2) At the Swiss-Liechtenstein border, therefore, no duties may be levied by either side for the duration of this Treaty, nor restrictions or prohibitions on import and export imposed, unless such are declared permissible in traffic between one canton and another.

As a consequence of the customs union, the provisions in force at the time this Treaty enters into force and coming into legal effect during its duration apply in the Principality of Liechtenstein in the same way as in Switzerland: 1. of the whole of Swiss customs legislation; 2. of the remaining federal legislation, in so far as the customs union requires its application.
Article 6 adds that in respect of the legislation applied under articles 4 and 5, Liechtenstein has the same legal position as the Swiss cantons.

Two traps in the platform itself. Fedlex serves consolidations that are not yet in force - SR 142.20 carried texts dated 2026-11-01 and 2027-01-01 alongside the one in force on 2026-10-11 - so taking the newest row returns a text that is not the law. In the Principality of Liechtenstein all Swiss legal and administrative provisions in legal effect at the time this Treaty enters into force, and coming into legal effect during its duration, apply which concern monetary, credit and currency policy within the meaning of the National Bank Act or the protection of Swiss coins and banknotes, or in so far as the performance of this Treaty otherwise requires their application in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The treaty’s preamble records that Liechtenstein had already introduced the Swiss franc as its currency by law; the treaty governs the monetary cooperation that follows from it.

Practical notes
The quotation on removal goods is from the Swiss ordinance, not a Liechtenstein one, because there is no Liechtenstein one. The chain that makes it applicable is the Customs Treaty, the 1996 publication Act and the government notice of 15 September 2026, all of which are quoted here.
Switzerland’s own record in this corpus covers the same provision, including the alcohol and household-stores allowances in article 14(3)(b) and the wider relief on marriage. Where the Swiss record states the rule, it states it for Liechtenstein too.
We did not read the Swiss Zollgesetz itself, only the ordinance made under it and the Liechtenstein instruments that apply both.

Cannot be cited for: It must not be cited for cantonal or communal law, which is the half of Swiss migration practice a resident actually meets: permits are granted by the cantons under article 40 of the AIG, the naturalisation residence requirement is set by each canton between two and five years under article 18 of the BüG, cantonal and communal income tax is outside the DBG entirely, and health insurance premium reductions are cantonal. Twenty-six cantons publish separately and none of them is here. It carries no case law - the Federal Supreme Court publishes at bger.ch - and no administrative guidance, which matters concretely: the list of states whose driving licences exchange without a control drive is a Federal Roads Office document issued under article 150(5)(e) of the VZV and is not in the classified compilation. Two traps in the platform itself. Fedlex serves consolidations that are not yet in force - SR 142.20 carried texts dated 2026-11-01 and 2027-01-01 alongside the one in force on 2026-10-11 - so taking the newest row returns a text that is not the law. And English translations published under article 13a(1)(d) of the Publikationsgesetz are translations of official publications and are not among the three binding versions, so nothing may be quoted from them as law.
