A Permit for One Semester at a Time, and It Ends With the Course
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Germany on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
195 exceptions recorded across 74 countries · none match Germany to Liechtenstein · Residency as a student
A student is not given a residence permit in Liechtenstein. Under the free-movement act an EEA or Swiss national studying here gets a short-stay permit for a semester or an academic year, renewable, on three conditions: the institution confirms they may begin or continue, there is money enough that no social assistance is drawn, and there is sickness insurance covering every risk. Study must be the main purpose of the stay, the permit stops being granted once the normal length of the course is clearly exceeded without objective reason, and it lapses the moment the course is abandoned or finished - at which point the student has to leave. A third-country national applies instead under the aliens act, where the same conditions appear with four more: the language skills the teaching requires, a suitable dwelling, no convictions, and a departure that appears assured.
At a glance
- Permit type and length
- A short-stay permit for one semester or one academic year
PFZG article 17(1). It is not a residence permit, and the draw does not apply to it.
- What ends it
- Abandoning or finishing the course - the permit lapses and departure must follow
PFZG article 17(4).
- Overrunning the course
- No further permit where the normal length under the study plan is clearly exceeded without objective reasons
PFZG article 17(3).
- Family a student may bring
- Spouse and dependent children only
PFZG article 41(2). Other family members a non-student could bring are excluded.
- Students and the quota
- The EEA Agreement provides for them inside the additional 0.5% quota for people not in work
Annex VIII, sectoral adaptations, section IV, which names Directive 93/96/EEC on the right of residence of students among the three directives the quota serves.
- Third-country students
- A short-stay permit under AuG article 19, with language, housing, good character and assured departure added
AuG article 19(1)(c), (f), (g) and (h).
Requirements
- Written confirmation from the recognised institution that the studies may be taken up or continued
- Financial means for subsistence and for the studies, so that no social assistance has to be drawn
- Comprehensive sickness insurance covering all risks in Liechtenstein
- Study as the main purpose of the stay
- Third-country nationals also: the language skills the teaching requires, a suitable dwelling or accommodation, no convictions for a crime or offence, and that departure afterwards appears assured; for minors, that care is assured
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Germany
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.

A short-stay permit may be granted to students for the duration of a semester or an academic year where: a) the institution or the competent body confirms in writing that the student may take up or continue the studies; b) the necessary financial means for subsistence and the studies are available so that no social assistance has to be drawn; and c) comprehensive sickness insurance cover is proved which covers all risks in Liechtenstein. 2) The main purpose of the stay in Liechtenstein must be the studies. 3) The short-stay permit is no longer granted where the ordinary duration of study under the institution’s study plan is clearly exceeded and there are no objective reasons for this. 4) On abandonment or completion of the studies the short-stay permit lapses and departure must take place. 5) The government regulates the details by ordinance.

Its own Rechtshinweis says 'Konsolidierte Rechtsvorschriften dienen ausschliesslich der Information und entfalten keine Rechtswirkung', and article 7(1) of the Kundmachungsgesetz says only the signed electronic version published in the Landesgesetzblatt is massgebend. For a treaty it is the texts designated authentic in the treaty that govern, under article 7(2).
A short-stay permit may be granted to foreign nationals for education and further training in Liechtenstein only where: a) the expected duration of the education or training is known; b) the head of a recognised institution confirms that the education or training may be taken up or continued; c) they have the language skills required for the teaching; d) sufficient financial means for subsistence and the studies are available so that no social assistance has to be drawn; e) the statutorily required sickness insurance cover is proved which covers all risks in Liechtenstein; f) a suitable dwelling or accommodation is available; g) there are no previous convictions for a crime or offence; and h) departure afterwards appears assured.
Letter h is the condition that marks the third-country track: the permit is given on the footing that the student will leave.

Practical notes
The permit is tied to the semester, so the question a student should ask is not whether it can be renewed but what happens at the end of the course: article 17(4) answers that the permit lapses and departure must follow.
This record rests on PFZG article 17 and article 41, and on AuG article 19. We did not read the ordinance provisions the government is empowered to make under article 17(5).
