Residence through Marriage to a Nicaraguan
Answer
The general rule applies to you
No exception is recorded for citizens of Spain on this topic. That is the answer, not a gap - everything below is the rule you get, unchanged.
81 exceptions recorded across 33 countries · none match Spain to Nicaragua · Residency through marriage
Marriage or a registered stable union with a Nicaraguan leads straight to permanent residence, but not on the day of the wedding: the regulation and the migration directorate both require the marriage or the union to have lasted at least two years before they will take the application. The residence survives the death of the Nicaraguan spouse and falls with a divorce, from the date of the resolution rather than from the end of the relationship, and it can be cancelled if the foreign spouse stops meeting a maintenance order. Naturalisation follows after two years of continuous residence rather than the ordinary four. The fee is the full one: the halved line on the directorate's price list covers the family of an immigrant or an investor, not the spouse of a Nicaraguan.
At a glance
- Minimum duration of the marriage or union
- 2 years
- Status granted
- Permanent residence
- Card validity
- 5 years, renewable

- C$ 18,312.15
The full permanent-residence fee. The halved line covers numerals 1 and 4 of article 30; the spouse of a Nicaraguan is numeral 5.
- Naturalisation after
- 2 years of continuous residence
- On divorce
- Status lost from the date of the resolution
- On the death of the spouse
- Residence is kept
- Failing a maintenance order
- Status may be cancelled and a date set to leave
- A marriage found to be for migration purposes
- Ground for revoking the residence
Requirements
- A marriage certificate with a Nicaraguan citizen, or a notarial declaration of a stable union, entered in the Civil Registry, and at least two years old
- The Nicaraguan spouse's identity card or birth certificate
- The birth certificate and identity card of any Nicaraguan children
- Where the applicant is economically dependent, a notarised maintenance declaration and proof of the maintainer's income
- Where the applicant has a business, a notarised declaration of income sources, a municipal trading licence, tax clearance and a taxpayer number
- The common residence requirements: form, passport, birth certificate, police certificate, health certificate
In detail
Two years before you may ask
The law says a foreigner who marries a Nicaraguan may acquire residence on the marital link, and leaves it there. The waiting period is in the regulation: the marriage certificate or the notarial declaration of a stable union must be of at least two years' duration. The migration directorate's own page repeats the sentence almost word for word, so there is no gap between what the instrument says and what the counter asks - which in Nicaragua is worth noting, because elsewhere in the same system there is. The practical effect is that a couple who marry abroad and move together spend the first two years on some other basis, or on none.
What ends it and what does not
A divorce or the dissolution of a stable union ends the status from the date of the resolution, not from the date the couple separated, and the article gives an express right to apply for a different status instead. Death does not end it. The one exception sits in the same sentence - a final conviction for causing the spouse's death - and even that is qualified where there are Nicaraguan children by birth. Two further things can cost the residence: failing a maintenance order, which the regulation lists among the grounds for cancellation, and a finding that the marriage was entered into for the migration benefit, which the law lists among the grounds for revocation.
The spouse pays, the investor's spouse does not
The migration directorate halves the permanent-residence fee for the subcategories in numerals 1 and 4 of article 30 - the ordinary immigrant, and the spouse, children and parents of an immigrant, an investor or a pensioner. The spouse of a Nicaraguan is numeral 5, which is not in that line. So the foreign husband of a Nicaraguan pays 18,312.15 córdobas while the foreign husband of a foreign investor pays 9,156.07. We found nothing explaining the distinction; it follows from which numerals the price list names.
Country-level policy
Nicaraguan statutes set their fees in tables, and the National Assembly's legal-information service publishes those tables as images rather than as text. In the migration law the schedules for articles 121, 122, 122 bis and 123 are each a line of prose followed by a picture; the traffic law does the same for its licence fees, its eye-test charges and its workshop penalties. The amounts are in the instrument and are not in anything a reader or a machine can quote from it. The practical consequence is that the only published money figures for migration and driving come from the migration directorate's own price lists, in córdobas, which are a statement of what the counter charges rather than of what the law sets.
Leaving Nicaragua is a procedure for a foreign resident in a way it is not for a Nicaraguan. Article 111 of the migration law says that residents leaving by the outer borders require an exit visa, on top of a valid passport and a valid residence card; the regulation makes it a form and a fee, obtainable in advance or at the border post on production of the travel document and the card. A non-resident whose stay has expired needs one too, with a fine attached. Giving up residence altogether produces a definitive exit visa. None of this is widely written down outside the instruments, and it is a recurring cost and an extra counter for anyone who travels regularly.
Nicaragua asks residence applicants to deposit, in cash, the real value of a return ticket to their country of origin or last residence, to cover the cost of a deportation that may never happen. The deposit is lodged once the residence is approved, is held in a Treasury account the migration directorate administers, earns the depositor no interest and is not revalued for inflation, though the directorate updates the amounts annually against air fares. It comes back on a claim made within sixty days of leaving the country for good or of acquiring Nicaraguan nationality. Several things forfeit it, including ninety days of irregular stay. Three groups are exempt: close relatives of Nicaraguans, minors, and nationals of countries with a ratified instrument and reciprocity.
Since the Digesto Jurídico laws of 2017 onwards, Nicaragua republishes its statutes as consolidated texts, subject by subject, each approved on a date and published in La Gaceta later. The consolidation date is a hard edge: everything enacted after it is simply not in the text, and the page gives no sign of what has happened since. The migration law's consolidated text was closed on 28 February 2023 and published on 18 January 2024, which is why it still defines the pensioner category by reference to a law repealed in August 2024. The same service carries superseded consolidations alongside current ones - the Constitution has a March 2024 consolidation and a February 2025 integral text at different addresses, with different article numbers for nationality.
What applies to you
Nothing changes for a citizen of Spain
We have no rule recorded that treats your citizenship differently here, so the general rule above is the one that applies to you. That is an answer, not a gap.
What the law says
«Los extranjeros que contraigan matrimonio o establezcan unión de hecho estable con nicaragüense dentro o fuera del territorio nacional conforme las leyes del país en donde se celebra, podrán adquirir residencia por vínculo matrimonial o unión de hecho estable»Our translation - not official
Foreigners who marry or establish a stable union with a Nicaraguan inside or outside the national territory, under the laws of the country where it is celebrated, may acquire residence on the marital link or stable union
A marriage celebrated abroad counts, provided it was valid where it was celebrated. The law itself sets no waiting period; the regulation does.

Standing: Maintains the text in force

It must never be cited as evidence that a statute is in force - it serves a repealed law in full with the repeal as a single line at the foot, which is why that route is still sold everywhere. It must not be cited for any amount set in a table, because those are published as images. The foreigner shall not lose their residence in the event of the death of their spouse or partner in a stable union
The exception, in the same sentence, is a final conviction for causing that death - and even then the status survives where there are Nicaraguan children by birth, under article 36.

Foreigners who are natives of Spain and those of Central American origin may acquire Nicaraguan nationality when they have been permanent residents in Nicaragua for a continuous period of two years, without needing to renounce that of their country of origin. Likewise the spouse by reason of marriage to a Nicaraguan may acquire Nicaraguan nationality with two years' continuous residence.
The exemption from renouncing is written for Spaniards and Central Americans. The spouse's sentence borrows the two-year period but not, on its face, the exemption.

Practical notes
The two-year requirement is in article 82 of the regulation and on the migration directorate's permanent-residence page, not in the law. A change to the regulation could move it without touching the statute.
Whether a spouse naturalising under the second sentence of article 54 must renounce their own nationality is not settled by the text. The exemption is written into the first sentence, for Spaniards and Central Americans; the spouse's sentence takes the two-year period and says nothing about renunciation, and article 53's general rule requires it. We have found nothing resolving this.
The fee difference between the spouse of a Nicaraguan and the spouse of a foreign investor follows from the numerals the directorate's price list names. It is recorded because it is counterintuitive, not because any instrument explains it.
